Building a Digital Database for Stock Images

Presented by David Riecks and Sam Merrell

Are you struggling with digital image overload? Do terms like Metadata, Keywords and IPTC Core make your eyes glaze over?

If you want to get serious about organizing your stock image collection, you need to embrace rather than avoid building an image database. Give us two hours and we can demystify and empower you to embrace rather than avoid these essentials in managing and marketing your digital images.

Learn how to unleash the power of Metadata and the IPTC Core in building your image collection. Discover tools to help you embed this information in your image files (from your scanner or digital camera) so your intellectual property is protected, and your image database practically builds itself. How should you address the IPTC evolution (should you use xmp sidecars or embed xmp data into RAW files?). Learn how to evaluate off-the-shelf image databases. Learn how to write accurate captions that are searchable, and synthesize keywords from your captions. Discover the most effective methods for storing and retrieving images and learn about some easy ways to present your images on a website.

David Riecks is a highly visible correspondent on digital subjects and a working assignment and stock photographer. His love of travel has taken him all over the world on assignments to photograph unique people and places. His stock images are represented by Mira and AGE Fotostock, as well as being sold direct from his own Web site. David was an early proponent of digital imaging and has become a "digital guru" to his peers. In addition to being a regular contributor on several professional forums, Riecks gives seminars on creating image intensive Web sites and was one of the principals who developed Mira's "digital standards." He founded "Controlled Vocabulary," a resource to help others learn how best to build controlled vocabulary lists, thesauri, and keyword hierarchies for describing images in databases. David currently chairs the SAA Imaging Technology Standards, and ASMP Digital Photography Standards & Practices committees, serves on the Creative Eye Board, and as the Chief Technical Advisor for the PLUS coalition; and somehow finds the time to participate in the DISC, DIM2, and IPTC4XMP working groups.

In the early 80's Sam Merrell was working on room-sized NASA computer-imaging systems to create digital composites of image data from Mars and Venus. In the 90's he wrote extensively about the dawn of digital photography--first as a writer and then as Associate Editor at PDN. He teaches digital photography at The School of Visual Arts, and, as an imaging consultant, has worked to help build rational digital imaging workflows with more than thirty stock photo agencies and image-intensive organizations. A year ago Merrell joined the PLUS Coalition--a non profit trade association working to establish standards that simplify and facilitate the licensing of photography and illustration. Together with with other PLUS members (photographers, illustrators, stock agencies, artist reps, publishers, advertisers, ad agencies, and graphic designers -- as well as their respective trade associations, Merrell led the recent effort to develop and draft the PLUS Glossary of Licensing Terms.
